On October 1oth, the sales presentation clip for War and Beauty 2 <金枝慾孽 2> took place at TVB City. Bowie Lam (林保怡) and Charmaine Sheh (佘詩曼) decided not to film the sequel, however, Maggie Cheung (張可頤) surprisingly did not appear in the sales presentation clip either. Although not yet officially confirmed to appear in the sequel, Ada Choi (蔡少芬) appeared in a high profile manner at the studio.
Allegedly, Maggie Cheung had a costume fitting for War and Beauty 2 on October 4th. A Sudden Weekly reporter witnessed Maggie losing her temper while waiting for a makeup artist at TVB City. Leaving the makeup studio, Maggie called a TVB executive via her cell phone and complained, “How come no one is helping me with my make-up?” Even prior to filming War and Beauty 2, Maggie already possessed such a difficult diva attitude, no wonder she was kicked out of the cast!
The reporter observed Maggie sitting inside the makeup area in studio #15. Maggie sat for fifteen minutes and after a brief exchange with a staff member inside the makeup studio, Maggie huffily left to make a phone call. She said in an upset voice, “One makeup artist is helping Sharon Chan (陳敏之) with her makeup, one was helping Wayne Lai (黎耀祥), and another was helping Linda Chung (鍾嘉欣). How come no one is helping me with my makeup? I do not want to complain; I am just saying! I’m okay in going to studio #4!” During the phone conversation, Maggie discovered the reporter’s presence and quickly walked away. She resorted to complaining via text message instead. Apparently, the person she was conversing with was a TVB executive manager.
Allegedly, when Maggie first entered the makeup studio on that day, she unabashedly asked the makeup artists to help her immediately. However, all the makeup artists were occupied and could not immediately attend to her. An insider revealed, “When Maggie entered the makeup studio, she stated the time needed to enter the studio. At the time, all the artists present had to go into the studio [for filming]! Maggie was only there for the costume fitting of War and Beauty 2, while other artists were there for actual filming! When the makeup artists told her no one was available to help her yet, Maggie complained to executive management. She was acting as if she were a top sister!”
Jonathan Chik Tired of Maggie Cheung
Although Producer Jonathan Chik (戚其義) knew that Maggie Cheung did not get along with the rest of the cast on the 2004 set of War and Beauty 2, he was forced to ask Maggie in order to increase the star power. However, Maggie filed numerous complaints prior to actual filming, which led to Jonathan ultimately changed his mind. An insider noted, “Everyone knows that there are not many first line artists left at TVB. Jonathan wanted to feature the original cast of War and Beauty. Since Gigi Lai (黎姿) and Charmaine Sheh did not wish to participate in the sequel, only Sheren Tang (鄧萃雯) and Maggie Cheung were left. In the past, Maggie acted as a diva and offended her costars.
“Jonathan knew that Maggie was difficult to get along with, but hoped that she had changed over the years and asked her to join the cast. At the costume fitting, this incident already flared and Maggie complained to executive management. Jonathan was tired of her and asked someone else to step in instead.” Allegedly, Sheren Tang had already confirmed to film and Jonathan was trying to persuade Ada Choi to join the cast of War and Beauty 2. Regarding Maggie Cheung’s screen time being canceled, the reporter attempted to contact Jonathan Chik without success.
Continuing to Act Like a Diva
After filming movie, Everlasting Regret <長恨歌>, in 2006, Maggie Cheung suffered from thyroiditis and took a hiatus from her acting career. In 2008, Maggie returned to TVB and took on simple hosting jobs, such as Living Up <更上一層樓>, Harbingers of Doom <大凶兆>, and Mr. Hong Kong <香港先生選舉>. In 2009, Maggie started filming series again and last year, she filmed Forensic Heroes 3 <法證先鋒III > when Charmaine Sheh was unable to film.
Portraying the role of Dr. Chung in Forensic Heroes 3, Maggie was criticized by netizens as looking old and haggard, while lacking professionalism. When netizens asked why the cast of Forensic Heroes 3 each possessed a tablet PC, Maggie immediately retorted back, “Using a tablet PC for work, why was there such a big response? After thinking for a long time, I am still perplexed. How is the tablet PC different than hand held devices? This is now the world’s most common thing; is everyone still stuck in the Stone Age?”
Since Maggie’s performance was criticized by netizens over and over again, it was unlikely that she will become this year’s TV Queen. An insider revealed, “Although Forensic Heroes 3 is an Anniversary series, there is a slim chance for Maggie Cheung to becomeTV Queen! At the numerous internal meetings that have occurred thus far, no executive manager mentioned her name. She offended numerous people and is difficult to get along with. Many producers are tired of her!”
Returning to TVB for only three years, Maggie received a limited income from filming series. However, she gained a good profit from property transactions and her net worth was estimated to be over $100 million HKD. In addition, Maggie had a boyfriend who worked in the financial industry. No wonder she acted as if she did not care about money.
