Hong Kong and Sichuan unite, Rebuild new homes" event
Miriam attended a sharing event for Sichuan home rebuilding. She said, "Natural disaster is heartless. The Sichuan earthquake had give me a big impact but at the same time let me understand that human is not just living individuals. Although one person's strength is little, if everyone is towards a same goal, there'll be a big effect. And this does not have difference in places."
Even since the earthquake happened, Miriam had been concerned about the development of the matter and found out from some organisations in what ways she could help.
Miriam continued, "On 30th May I participated in a big scale fund-raising event called 'In the Name of Life'. The organiser arranged for a little girl who survived in the earthquake to read out her experience. She appeared on wheelchair because her legs were covered by tiles for too long and lost the feel. What left the most impression on me was, when the rescuers found her but couldn't get her out immediately, she consoled the rescuers and asked them not to worry or be afraid, and even sang the children song 'Two Tigers' for them to hear. I feel she's very brave. Everyone has the will to live. What touches most is young children able to innocently experience life's values in the most direct way. Having seen her positiveness and strength, I told myself, no matted what difficulties I met in the future, I shouldn't give up or feel disheartened."
Like anyone, Miriam doesn't hope for natural disasters to happen. But disasters can witness the power of unity. As a nurse before, she had many feelings especially when she sees the performance of the medical team. If possible, she hopes to use her knowledge and contribute a part. Lastly she said, "This disaster let me understood that in this world, those who have the ability to give, are very fortunate. We should feel happy, and know how to treasure the chance to live and treasure our family. And also do human's part in loving and caring for nature more. Charity comes from love, we are born in the society and should contribute to the society, do our best in caring for others whenever possible. Sichuan post-disaster work is long-term. Other than continue on rebuilding, the taking care of child victims, psychological counseling and education are also very important. Hence I'll be following UNICEF to the affected areas to visit the children and let them feel the love and concern."
