Shawn Yue: SHOW ME THE PICTURES

Racy pictures allegedly of him and Edison Chen in a romp with Gillian Chung? Hong Kong star Shawn Yue chuckles when we asked him about them...

HONG Kong actor Shawn Yue has often been described as brooding and reticent. Don't even expect an exciting comeback from him.

However, when he was in town yesterday to promote the film, Rule #1, he was anything but boring.
Or difficult, for that matter.
Like when we asked him what's with the recent Hong Kong reports that there were pictures of him and Edison Chen fooling around with Twin's Gillian Chung.

The film's Singapore producer, who was already hovering around, instantly tried to cut in and disallowed us and a Chinese newspaper from asking Shawn about his chum and the nude scandal that has rocked the Hong Kong showbiz scene lately.

But Shawn, 26, chose to reply.
'Me?!' he asked, sounding surprised.
To which, one of his minders told him in Cantonese: 'I seemed to have heard of this.'

So we persisted.

'Do I still need to clarify?' he asked politely, more bemused than offended.
His Rule #1 co-star, Singapore actress Fiona Xie, then interjected: 'It's not possible that he would be involved.'

Shawn said with a chuckle: 'Just go ahead and find the pictures. I also want to see them. Which parts of the pictures resemble me?
'People see such news and will just treat them as a creative script. I think it's hilarious,' he said, breaking out in an exaggerated hyena-like laughter.
FRIENDS AGAIN?

Shawn and Edison, 27, had first worked together on Infernal Affairs II in 2002 and became good friends.
But they were said to have fallen out that year over Gillian and had reportedly fought backstage at a music awards ceremony.

However, after working on Blood Brothers in 2004, the two men were apparently friends again.
They have also worked on several other films together, including Initial D and Trivial Matters.
Since news broke about Edison's scandal, Shawn has chosen not to give his comments as he had said that the matter did not involve him.

Now, it seems that his name has also been dragged into the saga, but he appeared jolly before the Singapore press.
Dressed in a shirt buttoned to the top and tucked over khaki trousers, with a cup of iced coffee placed on the floor beside him, Shawn seemed to be enjoying his promotional tour.

He imitated Fiona's incessant chatter on the set - to her vehement protest - and when she coughed, told her she must go see the doctor.
Away from the emotionally-charged roles that he has so often played in movies, he appeared to be more relaxed.

Shawn said: 'The fun thing about being an actor is that you can try everything from a cop to a sex maniac.
'It's like magic. There's something charming in movies. I'm enjoying it.'

Rule #1, which is directed by local film-maker Kelvin Tong, opens in cinemas on 12 Mar and its sneak previews are this weekend.
Shawn plays a rookie cop, Sergeant Lee, who is paired with an inspector (Ekin Cheng) to investigate supernatural cases.

Fiona plays Shawn's teacher girlfriend.
Shawn's character is a nervous wreck as he tries to reconcile his beliefs in truth and justice while tackling his shady missions.
Shawn's other movie, Shamo, which is showing in Hong Kong cinemas this week, sees him playing a jailbird-turned-rapist and psychotickiller.

He said of his unconventional choice of roles: 'I have a broad benchmark when it comes to what I would do for the movies because I'm just playing a character, it doesn't represent me.'
He's certainly not concerned about maintaining a squeaky-clean image despite his matinee idol looks.
He added: 'If you want to think crooked, everything you do will become twisted. If you view things from an artistic point of view, it is a performance, it's not a big deal.

'If I'm worried about what people say, then I won't be an actor. If there is a story that I feel uncomfortable with and cannot accept, then I won't take it on.'
Is there anything that is taboo to him?
He deadpanned: 'I cannot imagine loving a man.'
Fiona ribbed: 'Aren't you usually like that?
'Shut up, don't bring up such things,' he quipped.
Shy Shawn sure seems to have blossomed.
