Based on real people and true events in China, it tells how a young Englishman, George Hogg (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) came to witness the brutal killing of men, women and children during The Rape of Nanking.
Almost beheaded, Jack Chen (Chow Yun Fat), a communist guerilla, came to his rescue and hid George in Huang Shi, a missionary home for war orphans. Here, a nurse, Lee Pearson (Radha Mitchell) and Madame Wang (Michelle Yeoh), a local and powerful businesswoman became his strength and aid in the time of difficulties.
However, with the war catching up, Jack and Madame Wang must help George, Lee and the sixty orphaned boys to escape from Huang Shi.
