Kevin Cheng, the comeback kid of 2011

For someone who "did not have an interest in acting" when he first started out in 2002, Kevin Cheng has sure come a long way with three Best Actor trophies under his belt now

Every actor craves for a breakthrough role and the same applies for Hong Kong TVB actor Kevin Cheng, who has been meandering in showbiz for close to two decades.

But the times are a-changing now for the 42-year-old actor, who is currently riding on an all-time career high after consecutively picking up three Best Actor trophies for Ghetto Justice -- in a span of two weeks -- at Malaysia's Astro Awards, Hong Kong's TVB Awards and the recent Asian Television Awards.

His stellar and convincing turn as a rogue lawyer in the TVB series won him rave reviews all around and placed Kevin on the fast-track towards regional success. Plus he's gaining fame in the Mainland China after starring in hit period drama series, Startling by Each Step (also known as Bu Bu Jing Xin), one of China's top-rated drama series for 2011 which also single-handedly revived co-star Nicky Wu's flagging career.

Looking dapper in a black bow-tie suit ensemble in an interview with xinmsn at Shangri-La Hotel last week, Kevin came across as an affable chap who speaks his mind without sounding brash or haughty. One might allude his sincere and humble disposition to the bumpy start he experienced in showbiz during his days as a singer in Taiwan, where he barely scraped through with financial assistance from his mother.

When he first started acting in TVB dramas in 2002, Kevin admitted that he "did not harbour much interest in acting" and saw it as a way of "getting by" with life back then.

"My interest in acting was cultivated over the years. I wanted to get better at the craft and often marvelled at the acting capabilities or other actors. The more you want to be good at something, the more time and effort you invest in it," he conceded.
