After five unsuccessful runs for the top prize at the Hong Kong Film Awards (HKFA), a disillusioned Karena Lam has quit showbiz.

The 31-year-old's contract ended at the end of last year after her final film roles in Lover's Discourse and the 3-D Don Quixote. She continued promoting the movies until March this year, but has since returned to school and even relieved her longtime assistant of her duties.

Producers of Don Quixote revealed during the movie's recent Beijing press conference that its lead actress, who was surprisingly absent, is actually studying in France.

It is not known if Karena is leaving the industry altogether or just taking a break.

Born in Canada and now expected to return there, the singer-actress made her debut in Taiwan at the tender age of 17.

But it was her first feature film July Rhapsody that shot her to stardom, as she grabbed the Best Newcomer and Best Supporting Actress awards at both the HKFA and Golden Horse Awards.

Since then, however, the HKFA Best Actress trophy has eluded the five-time nominee, who even once acted in a play pro bono so as to refine her skills.

Karena Lam and Andy Hui attacked by wind and rain

Karena Lam was filming the movie "親密" under freezing weather condition. The background of the film is in spring, therefore she has to wear the right clothes to reflect the weather. They were filming in Sai Kung Wong Shek Pier the other day when the temperature was only 8 degree celius. The scene was about Karena waiting for Ekin Cheng when typhoon signal number 8 was up. The crew had to use artificial fan and rain to make it real. Karena was constantly attacked by the rain and wind. After each take, the crew went straight to her and wrapped her up with thick duvet and towels. They wrapped her so much that you couldn't see her face. The director teased her that she looked like a farmer's wife. Karena laughed by saying that good job she has a lot of fat in reserve, now they are very useful.
