Lydia Shum's belongings to go on display for 6 months
It will be Lydia Shum's birthday (生忌) on 22nd this month. Her beloved daughter Joyce Cheng wanted to do something to remember her by donating a lot of her belongings to the Hong Kong Heritage Museum. Lydia's belongings will be on display for 6 months from 21st July. Joyce will be attending the opening ceremony for this particular event with a few of Lydia's good friends including Mrs. Chan Suk Fan. In the opening ceremony, relatives and friends will be able to purchase the recycled carrier bags made by Lydia's silk scarves shaped as a happy fruit with printed happy face to commemorate her happy image. 2000 bags will be made, selling at $100 dollar each. Lydia's good friend 娥姐 (Roman Tam's god mother) is sponsoring the whole cost. All the proceed will go to "Hong Kong Children Cancer Foundation". Mrs. Chan estimated that there will be more than 200 people attending the event and most of them are relatives and Lydia's good friends. The invitations will be sent out soon, but if they have missed anybody out, they can contact Ka Ho, Mrs. Chan's son to reissue their invitations because they need the invitation to attend the event. The invited guests will have the privilege to buy the silk scarf recycled bag first, any bags that are not sold will be left for the public to buy the next day.

Time passes very quickly,Lydia Shum had already left us for almost half a year. Our reporters were present near Joyce Cheng's apartment in Cambridge Garden at Kowloon Tong at about 4pm yesterday.They discovered a truck which belongs to the Hong Kong Heritage museum parking at the entrance of her home,the reporters saw about 5 staffs transporting boxes of goods which is believed to be Lydia's belongings.The staffs were gentle but quick to transport the goods into the truck,which afterwards they drove the truck to the Hong Kong Heritage museum at Sha Tin.
Our team later called Joyce Cheng to understand the situation,She says that sharing the belongings of her mother to the public and letting the public remember her is a meaningful task. As for the date of the exhibition,Joyce said that she is still currently arranging. The style of the exhibition will be similiar to the late godfather of cantonpop, Roman Tam. Disloyal is Horrible ?
Lydia Shum’s beloved daughter Joyce Cheng is suffering from all the tabloid stories. Lately, she allegedly has fallen out with her teacher Liu Jia-Chang (劉家昌) and Joyce’s career is now in the hands of Florence Chen (陳淑芬). Joyce Cheng’s Mother Days has become lonelier since she lost her beloved mom. She was able to perform in the musical “Flower Palace” as a waitress on Mother’s Day. She used her mom Lydia Shum’s name when she was contributing to charity. This Mother’s Day is very special meaning for Joyce and Lydia.
Lydia’s last performance on a charity programme was in 2006 for “星光熠熠耀保良”. The organizer of the event made special arrangements to re-enact certain parts of “Flower Palace”. They also had Joyce play Lydia’s part. They wanted to do a tribute to Lydia’s happy and professional work ethics. Eric Tsang spoke about how Lydia’s dream to perform in a musical play was realized in 2001. He said: “She (Lydia) hopes that the flame could be passed onto Joyce. This way the “Happy Fruit” spirit can stay in the people’s heart and seen by their eyes through Joyce’s continuation.”
As seen during the performance, Joyce not only sang well but she was very bright and cute. There were fans that screamed Joyce’s sang to cheer her on. Joyce Cheng is going to perform in "Miss you Much Leslie Chung" concert and she will be singing Lydia Sum's favorite song 儂本多情. She expressed that when she was younger she loved Leslie Cheung and even if he was on or off stage she thought he was very handsome. Joyce feels very pressured, and having no intention to imitate Leslie Cheung's voice/style is in fact using her own abilities to sing this song. She said “I will do my best to sing it, and I hope that Mummy and that Leslie will hear.” After Lydia Passed away, Joyce had been very busy with dealing with Lydia’s death (like her funeral etc.) Asked when she will plan to resume work, Joyce said “Slowly lah! HK to Stage Old Films Commemorating Lydia Shum

The Film Archive of Hong Kong will present 12 selected films by the late Lydia Shum from March 7 to 16 to showcase the inspiring performances on screen by the veteran actress and popular comedian, a spokesman for organization said Tuesday.
Shum, known for her iconic thick black-rimmed glasses and heavy build, died in Hong Kong on February 19 after reportedly suffering from cancer and a bile duct condition.
As a film and television comedienne for more than 40 years, Shum had charmed people with her trademark laughter, the spokesman said.
Shum acted in a variety of characters in more than 160 films and hosted more than 5,000 episodes of variety shows.
The 12 selected films include "Dream of the Red Chamber" (1962), "Four Sisters" (1966), "Master Cute and Tai Fan Shu" (1966), "First Love Forever" (1967), "Three Flowers of the Factory" (1967), "Teddy Girls" (1969), "Lovely Husbands" (1969), "The House of 72 Tenants" (1973), "It's a Mad Mad Mad World" (1987), "Double Fattiness" (1988), "Mother Vs Mother" (1988) and "In-laws, Out-laws" (2004).
The films will be screened at the Film Archive, the Science Museum and the Space Museum, the spokesman said, adding that an exhibition of her stills and photographs will be staged at the Film Archive

Tribute to Lydia Shum turns into Public Trial of Adam Cheng

The remains of comedienne Lydia Shum Din-ha were laid to rest in Burnaby, Canada, early Thursday morning (HK time) after a funeral service attended by 200 people including a representative of the Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
Harper, in a message through his representative, Wai Young, praised Shum for being a role model for immigrants and for becoming involved in community service before it became popular to do so.
The Western-style funeral service took place in the chapel of Forest Lawn Memorial Park, where Shum's 20-year- old daughter Joyce Cheng Yan-yee was among those delivering tributes.
"Have you ever seen a shooting star?" Cheng said as she wept. "No? Well, they are very rare. When they appear they are so brilliant, so bright. You are my shooting star, mom."
Also in the attendance were Shum's brother, Canadian fashion designer Alfred Sung, composer Joseph Koo Ka- fai, Television Broadcasts general manager Stephen Chan Chi-wan and Vancouver city councillor Bar Chya Lee.
The cemetery was heavily guarded by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, with media barred during the service and burial. A woman working for a news agency was arrested after she sneaked into the cemetery posing as a driver and started taking pictures. But she was freed later.
In the center of the chapel was a picture of Shum in a red outfit, flashing her signature smile.
The chapel was also decorated with Shum's favorite champagne roses and white orchids.
Among the bouquets was one of white roses and lilies from Shum's former husband, Adam Cheng Siu-chau, who was not in attendance.
After the one-hour service, Shum's remains were buried at a remote location in the cemetery rather than next to her parents. A condolence reception was then held in Richmond. It was attended by celebrities including Anita Lee Yuen-wah, Poon Ji-man and his wife and Tian Ni.
The City of Vancouver declared June 1, 2008 - Shum's 63th birthday - to be "Ms Fei Fei Day." The government explained Shum was better known by her nickname "Fei Fei," which is literally "fatty" in Cantonese.
Vancouver mayor Sam Sullivan presented an honorary certificate to Joyce Cheng. "She brought us so much joy," he said in Cantonese. "Her laugh will forever remain on Earth."
A memorial ceremony will be held in Hong Kong on Sunday.

BURNABY - In Asia, she was known affectionately as Fei-Fei or Sister Fei, an allusion to her rotund figure. Her real name in English was Lydia Sum or Lydia Shum. Her named was spelled both ways.
The funeral for the beloved actress and comedienne Wednesday drew a large police presence, a horde of journalists, both local and from Hong Kong, and a stream of shiny cars to the Forest Lawn cemetery in Burnaby.
Among those in the cars were her brother, Canadian fashion designer Alfred Sung; her daughter Joyce Cheng; Hong Kong composer Joseph Koo; and TVB general manager Stephen Chan from Hong Kong, whose television network broadcast the show Enjoy Yourself Tonight, which was hosted by Sum for several decades and beamed into millions of Asian homes every evening.
In a grey drizzle, the funeral party was a sea of dark suits dotted by white roses, which each guest wore in Sum's memory.
With her signature wing-tip, Coke-bottle glasses and poofy hair, Sum was a female version of an Ed Sullivan or Johnny Carson, only much funnier. With her ability to think on her feet and play comic roles such as chorus girls or pillow-talk girlfriends, she endeared herself to many.
Her role as talk-show host put her in great demand to host big, glitzy fundraisers, both in Hong Kong and in Vancouver, where she has hosted the annual SUCCESS gala almost every year.
She was well known in Taiwan and in Singapore, where she anchored the sitcom Living With Lydia, and was cherished in every corner of China. Born in Shanghai and raised in Hong Kong, she moved here in the mid-1980s.
She gave birth to her daughter here, but continued to spend much of her time in Hong Kong. In the end, she was buried here, in the same graveyard as her mother and father.
One look at her gravesite was all you needed to know that she enjoyed rock-star status in the Asian world. The site was a forest of flowers with messages mostly in Chinese and a few in English sprinkled here and there.
Included was a big bouquet of white roses and lilies from her ex-husband, Hong Kong actor Adam Cheng, who did not attend the service.
There was also a message reading "with all our love from your brothers and sisters." Sum, who died of liver cancer at the age of 60 in Hong Kong last week, had eight brothers and sisters.
The Forest Lawn chapel was filled to overflowing with more than 300 people in attendance. Media were barred from the service and kept at a distance with RCMP watching over them. They were allowed to visit the gravesite after the service.
The event was marred by the arrest of a young woman who was dragged yelling from the cemetery grounds. Const. Alexandra Mulvihill of the Burnaby RCMP said the woman got on the grounds as the driver of a car. She was arrested when she began taking pictures.
Mulvihill said she believed the woman was with a local news agency. She appeared to leave the grounds lying down in the back of a police cruiser. She was later released. Mulvihill couldn't say whether she had been charged.
Sum's family did not meet with media and requested they be kept out of the funeral, although a few were among the invited mourners.

Beloved personality (Lydia Shum) was 'an inspiration' to Vancouver community
When Vivien Louie was growing up in Hong Kong in the 1970s, Lydia Shum was not only a household name, she was part of the household: Watching Ms. Shum as host of the variety show Enjoy Yourself Tonight was a nightly family event, from the time Ms. Louie was two or three years old.
"She smiled and laughed all the time," said Ms. Louie, promotions and special projects manager for Fairchild Television in Vancouver. "She just [brought] happiness to people."
Ms. Shum, who is also known as Lydia Shum Din-Ha, Lydia Sung and Lydia Sum, will be buried tomorrow after a private funeral in Metro Vancouver, where she lived for many years before returning to Hong Kong. The popular television host, actress and comedienne died last week of cancer.
Ms. Shum had strong family connections to Vancouver: Her daughter and some of her siblings live here, as did her mother, who died recently. Ms. Shum's brother is the fashion designer Alfred Sung.
"Everybody when you ask them [about] Fei Fei, everybody knows her," said Ms. Louie, who compared Ms. Shum to Oprah Winfrey in terms of popularity. Fei Fei literally means "fat fat" but was a term of endearment Ms. Shum embraced, according to her fans. She was easily recognizable, with her signature pop-bottle-thick wing-tipped glasses, her big hair and her smile.
Ms. Shum was born in Shanghai in 1945 or 1947 (the discrepancy in birth year may arise from the fact that she began acting at such a young age that she pretended to be older than she was) and moved with her family to Hong Kong shortly thereafter.
She landed her first film roles in the 1960s, and later moved to hosting; fronting Enjoy Yourself Tonight, which ran for three decades, and many awards programs.
Her hosting duties extended to Vancouver, where she was host of fundraising galas for the immigrant services group S.U.C.C.E.S.S.
"Since 1997, we've raised about in excess of $5-million, and she had a huge part in making that happen," said Tony Moy, director of resource development with
S.U.C.C.E.S.S.
Mr. Moy said Ms. Shum not only volunteered her services, flying to Vancouver on her own dime to appear at the galas, she also brought some of the biggest Hong Kong pop stars along with her, people the foundation would never have been able to attract - or pay.
"Lydia set an example and people followed," Mr. Moy said.
"Lydia's fundraising efforts on behalf of S.U.C.C.E.S.S. are an inspiration, and remind us that one person can truly make a difference," B.C. Premier Gordon Campbell said in a statement yesterday.
"She leaves behind a legacy of joy, laughter and caring."
Vancouver's mayor will make a special proclamation at today's council meeting and will declare a Lydia Shum Day.
Family members are expected to attend.
Ms. Shum will be buried beside her parents.
Her funny, friendly persona was not just an act, said Mr. Moy (who compares her to Roseanne Barr and Milton Berle).
He said she was so popular with the workers at GM Place, where she was host of the S.U.C.C.E.S.S. galas, that the stadium workers would often inquire about whether she was returning.
"That's the kind of impression that she left on people," said Mr. Moy, who knew Ms. Shum was ill but was nevertheless shaken by her death.
"You can't help but cry over what a great lady she was and what a talent she was and what a legacy she has left in Hong Kong and for people all over the world.
"She's one of a kind. No one, no one, no one will ever be able to replace her."
A public memorial for Lydia Shum will be held on Friday from 2 to 5 p.m. at Choi Hall at the S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Social Service Centre in Vancouver.

She landed her first film roles in the 1960s, and later moved to hosting; fronting Enjoy Yourself Tonight, which ran for three decades, and many awards programs.
Her hosting duties extended to Vancouver, where she was host of fundraising galas for the immigrant services group S.U.C.C.E.S.S.
"Since 1997, we've raised about in excess of $5-million, and she had a huge part in making that happen," said Tony Moy, director of resource development with
S.U.C.C.E.S.S.
Mr. Moy said Ms. Shum not only volunteered her services, flying to Vancouver on her own dime to appear at the galas, she also brought some of the biggest Hong Kong pop stars along with her, people the foundation would never have been able to attract - or pay.
"Lydia set an example and people followed," Mr. Moy said.
"Lydia's fundraising efforts on behalf of S.U.C.C.E.S.S. are an inspiration, and remind us that one person can truly make a difference," B.C. Premier Gordon Campbell said in a statement yesterday.
"She leaves behind a legacy of joy, laughter and caring."
Vancouver's mayor will make a special proclamation at today's council meeting and will declare a Lydia Shum Day.
Family members are expected to attend.
Ms. Shum will be buried beside her parents.
Her funny, friendly persona was not just an act, said Mr. Moy (who compares her to Roseanne Barr and Milton Berle).
He said she was so popular with the workers at GM Place, where she was host of the S.U.C.C.E.S.S. galas, that the stadium workers would often inquire about whether she was returning.
"That's the kind of impression that she left on people," said Mr. Moy, who knew Ms. Shum was ill but was nevertheless shaken by her death.
"You can't help but cry over what a great lady she was and what a talent she was and what a legacy she has left in Hong Kong and for people all over the world.
"She's one of a kind. No one, no one, no one will ever be able to replace her."
A public memorial for Lydia Shum will be held on Friday from 2 to 5 p.m. at Choi Hall at the S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Social Service Centre in Vancouver.

The remains of popular comedienne Lydia Shum Din-ha arrived in Vancouver early yesterday morning (HK time) in advance of her funeral set for early Thursday.
The casket, accompanied by her daughter and friends, was flown in by a Cathay Pacific flight which landed at 2.40am (HK time) at the Vancouver International Airport where a horde of more than 50 Canadian and Hong Kong reporters were waiting.
According to reports, Shum's 20-year-old daughter Joyce Cheng Yan-yee, long time friend Florence Chan Suk-fan and Chan's son Chan Ka-ho were able to slip past the media using a special passage.
The hearse carrying Shum's body drove to Forest Lawn Memorial-Parks and Mortuaries in Burnaby.
Shum's family and friends are expected to meet today to discuss final arrangements for the funeral.
The former actress/singer/TV host will be laid to rest next to her parents at the park around 10am on Wednesday, Canadian time (HK 2am Thursday).
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police at Burnaby is expected to tighten security to ensure there are no disruptions.
A statement from Vancouver mayor Sam Sullivan praising Shum's contribution to the city will be read during the ceremony.
The local Chinese community and politicians are proposing a Lydia Shum Day. The date is yet to be set pending approval from Shum's family.
